Why High Blood Sugar Can Cause You to Lose Your Focus
Chronic high blood sugar is caused by your body not
producing enough insulin to absorb the glucose in the blood. Another name for
this is diabetes.
There are two types of Diabetes: Type I and Type
II. Type I is sometimes called juvenile diabetes because it generally diagnosed
in children or teens. With Type I the body doesn’t produce insulin. With Type
II Diabetes the body produces insulin but not enough to absorb the glucose from
the blood.
Uncontrolled blood sugar can cause many problems in
your body – nerve, blood vessel and organ damage, heart disease and stroke just
to name a few. It can also affect your brain by causing problems processing
information, your ability to think clearly and your memory, which makes it
difficult to focus on anything.
Some causes of high blood sugar are poor diet, lack
of exercise and being overweight. These are things YOU have control over. YOU
have the ability to change these areas of your life.
Diet
Eating highly processed foods and lots of sugary
snacks will put your blood sugar out of whack. It seems the more you eat of
these types of food the more you want. It’s a vicious cycle.
It will be hard at first but there are two ways you
can go about changing your diet. Going cold turkey or by slowly incorporating
fresh whole foods into your diet.
Cold turkey isn’t recommended because eventually
people will fall off the wagon and it’s really hard to climb back on. This can
also lead to yoyo dieting which is losing weight and gaining it back.
The best way to go about changing poor eating
habits is begin by adding in a healthy snack or meal daily. After a week or two
of getting used to doing this you can replace another meal with a healthy
choice and so on. Eventually your bad eating habits will be a thing of the
past.
Exercise/Weight
If you lead a sedentary lifestyle it will be hard
to lose much weight even if you’re eating right. Losing weight is something
that will help get your blood sugar under control.
You have to get out and move. It doesn’t have to be
a regimented schedule if you’re not into that type of thing and you don’t have
to be a gym rat either. The most important thing is to get your heart rate up
doing things you enjoy so that you’ll stick with it.
A few of the easiest ways to incorporate movement
into your day is by tweaking your daily habits. When you go shopping, park at
the far end so you can get some exercise in by walking across the parking lot.
If you normally ride the elevator to your office, take the stairs, even if it
is just a flight or two. Get creative and move your body!
These problems can be hard to overcome,
especially if you don’t feel healthy to deal with them. Take it slow but be
deliberate in changing your diet and including some form of exercise every day.
It may take a while but you will eventually see the changes in your body and
mind.
